A Special Thank You to Judy & Zani

Today, I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Judy and Zani. You are living proof that when you love what you do and put your whole heart into it, you can achieve the impossible.

Even though I am based in Sodwana Bay, we receive calls for help from all over. Over time, I have built up a network of amazing contacts, and Judy, even though we have never met in person, you are always there. Whether it’s helping an animal in need or offering expert advice, it is truly a privilege to work with someone like you.

A huge thank you also goes to Zani for stepping up to fetch the owl and doing everything necessary to save her life.

“It is truly amazing to work with people who lead with compassion.”

Dear Mari, Judy & Zani,

Mari, on behalf of everyone at Mizbe’ah Conference & Wedding Lodge, I write this letter with a deep sense of gratitude, admiration, and heartfelt appreciation for the extraordinary role you played in what can only be described as a moment of divine intervention and compassion in action.

On Friday, the 1st of May 2026, what began as an ordinary day at our lodge quickly turned into a situation of urgency and concern. I received a distress call from one of our employees regarding an injured wild bird on the property. Without hesitation, I made my way to assess the situation, only to discover a Barn Owl in a critical state. Her condition was alarming—her legs had already stiffened, and it was evident that she required immediate and knowledgeable intervention if she were to have any chance of survival.

In that moment, there was no uncertainty in my mind about who to contact. When one is faced with a situation involving vulnerable wildlife, there are very few individuals whose dedication, knowledge, and selflessness stand out so clearly. You were that person. With what I can only describe as a leap of faith, I reached out to you at Free Spirit Wildlife Sanctuary in Sodwana Bay, despite the considerable distance between us. Situated 25 km north of Pretoria, we knew the logistical challenge was significant, but hope often resides in reaching out to those who truly care.

True to your nature and unwavering commitment to wildlife, you responded without delay. Your calm, decisive, and compassionate approach immediately shifted the trajectory of the situation. Not only did you offer guidance, but you also connected us with Judy from SpottyBird Wildlife in Centurion, whose expertise and clear instructions proved invaluable. Judy provided immediate, practical advice on how to stabilize the owl and administer emergency care, ensuring that we could act swiftly while arrangements for further treatment were being considered.

However, as is often the case in real-life emergencies, a new challenge quickly emerged. The urgency of transporting the owl for veterinary care conflicted with our responsibilities at the lodge, as we were expecting the imminent arrival of guests. It was a moment that could easily have led to compromise or delay—but instead, it became a powerful testament to the strength of collaboration and shared purpose.

Through your coordination and continued support, and with Judy’s involvement, a third remarkable individual entered the situation—Zani Stoffberg. Without hesitation, Zani stepped forward as another willing and compassionate responder. What unfolded next was nothing short of extraordinary. In an incredibly short span of time, three individuals—each driven by a deep love for wildlife—came together seamlessly to ensure that this Barn Owl received the urgent care she needed.

Mari, your role in orchestrating this response cannot be overstated. Your willingness to act immediately, to connect the right people, and to remain engaged throughout the process speaks volumes about your character and your calling. It is rare to encounter someone whose heart for wildlife is so vast, whose actions are so decisive, and whose impact is so profound.

Today, we received the uplifting news from Judy that the owl has pulled through. Not only has she survived, but she is expected to make a full recovery and, in time, will most likely be released back into her natural environment—right here, where she belongs. This outcome is nothing short of miraculous, and it stands as a direct result of the collective efforts you set in motion.

This experience has left a lasting impression on all of us at Mizbe’ah Conference & Wedding Lodge. It reminded us that even in moments of uncertainty and pressure, there are individuals and organizations who rise above challenges, guided not by convenience, but by compassion and purpose. You embody that spirit completely.

Your work at Free Spirit Wildlife Sanctuary is not just important—it is essential. In a world where wildlife often faces increasing threats and diminishing habitats, your dedication serves as a beacon of hope. You do not merely respond to emergencies; you inspire others to care, to act, and to recognize the intrinsic value of every living creature.

We would also like to extend our sincere appreciation to Judy and Zani. Their professionalism, responsiveness, and genuine care were instrumental in this rescue. Together, the three of you formed a network of support that exemplifies what can be achieved when passion meets action.

From all of us at Mizbe’ah Conference & Wedding Lodge, we thank you—not just for what you did on that day, but for who you are every day. Your commitment to protecting and preserving wildlife, regardless of the circumstances or challenges, is both admirable and deeply respected.

May you continue to be strengthened in your mission, and may your work continue to touch lives—both human and animal—in the profound way that it has touched ours.

We have duly named the Barn Owl after the 3 Angels that ensured he safety and road to recovery, she will be henceforth known as MJZ.

With deepest gratitude and sincere appreciation,

Mizbe’ah Conference & Wedding Lodge
