Our History

Dear Friends and Animal Lovers,

I’m writing to share the story of Free Spirit Sanctuary, a journey that began with a tiny bat pup named Rambo and a life-changing realization about the importance of wildlife rehabilitation. My initial fear of bats, instilled from childhood, quickly transformed into compassion as I cared for Rambo. This experience ignited a passion within me to help these incredible creatures and all wildlife in need.

My path wasn’t always easy. Early attempts at rescuing, like the heartbreaking loss of two spotted eagle owls, taught me valuable lessons. With the guidance of experts like Tammy from Free Me, I learned the importance of proper care and the profound impact of releasing animals back into their natural habitat – hence the name “Free Spirit.”

The sanctuary’s growth has been a journey of collaboration and generosity. Bold and Nuts’ monthly pledge has provided crucial financial help. The support of Adel, Martin, and Ben, who are always ready to lend a hand, has been invaluable. Yvonne in the bush and her GoFundMe campaign provided a tremendous boost, enabling us to build enclosures, a greenhouse for bats, and upgrade facilities for animals like Nala and Sheila. Finally, after much paperwork (thanks to Adel!), we received our permits in 2024, enabling us to rescue even more animals. The NPO status, finally achieved in 2025 after three attempts, further strengthens our ability to operate.

I’m incredibly grateful for the growth of our Facebook page and WhatsApp group, and for every like, comment, and donation. My amazing staff, especially Stembile, embodies the compassion and dedication that drives our work. The support from everyone – Bold and Nuts Mbazwana , Adel, Martin, Ben, Yvonne in the bush, Takealot wishlist donors, Nwabu Lodge, Hleke Imvubu boat cruises, and all of you – has been essential.

However, the costs of running a sanctuary are substantial. Monthly expenses, excluding the daily food needs of the animals, are significant. We have exciting plans to develop a new property, which will allow us to help even more wildlife. This expansion requires additional resources, both financial and material.

That’s why I’m writing to you today with a heartfelt request. Would you consider becoming a monthly donor to Free Spirit Sanctuary? Your recurring contribution, no matter the size, will make a tremendous difference in our ability to provide care and rehabilitation to animals in need. As a registered NPO, donations are tax-deductible. If you own a business and would like to support our new property development, we would be happy to display your signage. We also welcome donations of second-hand building materials.

Free Spirit Sanctuary wouldn’t exist without the kindness and generosity of people like you. Your support empowers us to continue our mission of rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing wildlife back into their natural homes. Thank you for being a part of our journey.
