Today, I thought I’d share some fun facts about our amazing squirrels – they’re truly busybodies! I could watch them for hours and just wish I had half their energy. ![]()
Then there’s Peanut, the little spoiled brat, who’s definitely a demanding character! Let me explain: we start preparing their fresh food and veggies at 8 AM. As we get more animals, it takes a bit longer, so by 8:30 AM, Peanut starts with this weird, high-pitched scream, like someone’s attacking him! He’ll keep going until he gets his food, then he’s happy. And trust me, it’s not a low sound – I’m pretty sure our neighbors can hear him! He also loves to photobomb. If you think you can take a photo, boom! He’s right in front of the camera. He’s truly my little busy boy.
Chestnut is the quiet one. Since I received him, he’s been really easy and just does his own thing. He’s also the shy one; I think some days he gets embarrassed when Peanut goes on like a drama queen (hahaha!).
It’s truly beautiful to see them grow and observe their different behaviors. That’s what I love about my work – they were so, so small when I received them, and now they’re almost ready for release! That’s the exciting part!
Fun Facts About Squirrels!
These little acrobats are full of surprises!
Teeth That Never Stop Growing: A squirrel’s front teeth (incisors) grow continuously throughout their lives, which is why they constantly gnaw on things to keep them at a manageable length. Talk about a natural dental plan!
Exceptional Jumpers & Climbers: They can jump up to 6 feet vertically and 10 feet horizontally, using their tails for balance and even as a parachute! Plus, their double-jointed hind legs let them scurry up trees and even run down headfirst.
Unintentional Tree Planters: When squirrels bury nuts and seeds, they often forget where they hid them. This forgetfulness actually helps in the dispersal of trees and contributes to forest growth!
Over 280 Species! There are so many different kinds of squirrels found on every continent except Australia and Antarctica. What a diverse family!
Great Communicators: Squirrels use a variety of vocalizations and tail movements to chat with each other. It’s fascinating to watch their “tail wags” in action!
